How to Fix a Slow-Draining AC Condensate Line

Tools You’ll Need

A wet/dry shop vacuum with a hose adapter sized for the drain line (or a drain line-specific adapter kit), distilled white vinegar, a funnel, and a towel for any spillage around the indoor unit.

Step-by-Step Fix

Turn the system off at the thermostat and at the breaker before you start. Find the drain line’s access point near the indoor air handler — it’s usually a vertical PVC pipe with a T-shaped fitting and a removable cap, sometimes labeled. Remove the cap and pour a cup of distilled white vinegar down the line with a funnel; vinegar breaks down the algae and mold buildup without damaging the PVC the way bleach can over time. Let it sit for 30 minutes. Then head outside to where the line terminates (usually a PVC pipe near the outdoor unit or condenser) and fit a wet/dry shop vac with a snug adapter over the opening, sealing around it with a towel or tape if needed, and run the vacuum for 2-3 minutes to pull the loosened clog out from the other end. Pour a cup of water down the indoor access point afterward to confirm it drains freely and quickly. Replace the cap when you’re done, and turn the system back on.

When to Call an HVAC Technician

Many systems have a condensate safety float switch that automatically shuts the AC off when the drain pan fills up — if your system won’t turn on at all and you’ve already cleared the line, check whether that switch has tripped and reset it once the pan is empty. If water is visibly pooling around the indoor unit, staining the ceiling below an attic-mounted system, or the vinegar-and-vacuum method doesn’t restore normal drainage after a couple of attempts, the clog may be further into the line or the drain pan itself may be cracked, both of which are worth having a technician look at before the water damage gets worse. Doing this flush once or twice a year, especially before peak summer use, is a cheap way to avoid the problem altogether.
